  • Doug Hyde News – new art direction & new releases coming in September 2013

    Doug Hyde’s publisher, Demontfort Fine Art, have been circulating teaser imagery for their range of New Releases which will include a Doug Hyde collection. Set to be unveiled to gallery owners from Sunday 1st September 2013, when Demontfort Fine Art host their trade only launch day (which coincides with the NEC Autumn Fair) we expect these images to then be revealed to the public within days.

    The so far singly revealed artwork (see above), has been blurred out except for the digitally inserted magnifying glass and we can see that this appears to be a very different Doug Hyde image. We believe this collection will be called ‘Rural Retreat’ and this is either the 15th or 16th collection to date by Doug (will confirm in a future post!) – a remarkable achievement in its own right.

    I also believe it will depict amongst other things: dogs, cats, geese, hedgehogs & bunnies, as well as buckets & eggs! and the impetus for this is that Doug has himself has recently moved to a more rural location in the UK.

    I have also been told there is at least one sculpture amongst the limited editions releases.

  • Artist Steven Townsend News – releases 1st limited edition Border Collie print in 3 years – set in Deepdale Hause, Lake District

    Steven Townsend is famous in the UK & overseas for his artwork and his limited edition paintings of Border Collie sheep dogs. Many that follow his work & his photo realistic style, know his art is often mistaken for photography & ‘Ready To Start’ is no exception

    For the first time in 3 years, in fact almost exactly 3 years, Steven has released a brand new border collie limited edition called ‘Ready To Start’ & the dog Victor is pictured in between some very famous landmarks in the Lake District in the UK. Just how many landmarks and tourist areas Victor was standing in between, was a surprise…

    We caught up with Steven Townsend and he talks us through the Lake District backdrop in ‘Ready To Start’:

    “This is one of my favourite collies to paint & it features the dog ‘Victor’ the same dog who is in the paintings ‘Victor’ and ‘Tommy’ (‘Tommy’ features Victor but I choose the name Tommy for the painting!) & the dog is about 4-5 years old

    This is a very popular walker’s area in the Lake District, the area is called ‘Deepdale Hause.’ Victor is actually on the cross roads & you can access this spot from so many different areas.

    At the back we you can see ‘Grisedale Tarn’ (‘tarn’ is a mountain lake or pool) & just off at the left of the picture, behind the first mountain you can see ‘Seat Sandle’ behind it, another very famous landmark.

    Now looks at Victor’s mouth and directly where the pink part of his mouth points, can you see the small mountain path? that is ‘Falcon Crag.’

    Victor himself is looking towards the ‘Grisedale Valley.’ (not pictured)

    Above Victor’s ears in the far distance (and quite greyed out) is ‘Buttemere Range’, or ‘Scarfell Range’ an absolutely massive area (‘Scafell Pike’ is the highest mountain in England)

    Lastly, the hill to the left of the picture, showing in shadow, if you go up that it leads to Fairfield.

    Geologically this painting is spot on, rock for rock. (i.e. its 100% accurate) I thoroughly enjoyed photographing Victor for this new painting and it was a pleasure to be in ‘Deepdale Hause.’ (Steven goes out and takes 100s of photographs, then comes back to his studio and paints from them) There are lots of sheep up there all around (not pictured) and as it moves into the evening, you can look out and see scores of white eyes all around in the fields, as the sheep sit down and move around.” (Steve chuckles)

  • Beryl Cook News – Official Collectors edition release: ‘Dancing the Black Bottom’

    Although the wonderful Beryl Cook is no longer with us, she most certainly lives on in her popular postcard-esque paintings. Cook was known for her portrayals of saucy, larger than life characters, often seen to be completely engrossed in their spit-and-sawdust pub social life.

    The ‘larger’ ladies and male characters that commonly feature in her work are inspired by the colourful characters Beryl came across in the Dolphin Pub, whilst living in the seaside town of Plymouth. In stark contrast her characters Beryl was a shy, modest woman. You could say that it was this dissimilarity that drove her to perpetually observe these larger than life personalities, as although Beryl felt she could never be this way in person, she could, in a sense, be a bit flamboyant and saucy through her art.

    Her pieces are always full of colour and have fun titles that have the ability to make you giggle. You feel that you could walk into any pub in any British seaside town and encounter the characters Beryl is famous for painting. Her art is all about pleasure; her characters are always seen enjoying the guilty pleasures of nightlife, including booze, fags, and with a little imagination sordid chitchat and gossip. She was most definitely a talented woman that will be deeply missed by the art world and fans alike.

    We have seen all of these releases in person and the colour reproduction is superb, we feel the printing technology continues to improve year on year in the UK. Also they are professionally printed, mounted, come with certificates & are personally approved by the family to print;

    It was their express wish that her pictures continue to be made available to the public. Our research shows that these lithographic prints remain the most cost effective way of owning high quality, large, collectable limited editions of her work.
